Hammock Camper or Hammock Hiker?

I wish to be just a hiking hanger but with the scouts and several of their campout are camping venues I must camp.

Hiker, plus camper on outings like trail builds. Backyard hanging just to sleep outside.

I am a hiker. If I could hike from place to place and have my wife waiting for me at the end of the trail each day, I stay with her (she doesn't camp), but I do love waking up in the woods. So, camping for me is a necessity. Hammock camping makes it worth sleeping in the woods so I can wake up there.
Being in the woods and experiencing as much as possible is what I enjoy. I'm a hiking hanger.

It's been interesting reading this thread and now I'll add my own thoughts for what it's worth. I discovered hammocking (luckily) and immediately cued into how it would advance and make my hikes more rewarding. love the miles, love the woods, hate sleeping on the ground. But now that I have hammocks, I see the benefits in utilizing them in other camping aspects as well (car, motorcycling, etc.) I gave up motorcycling in pursuit of hiking while my son is at that fun age where we can have adventures together. But someday he'll be on his own and I'll get back on that motorcycle to tour the country again... I see the benefits of the hammock for that journey too avoiding motels and crowds as much as possible.

After reading this thread and thinking about it I have finally decided to reply. I kind of classify myself as both but i'm actually more of a hammock utilizer. About 10 years ago I bought a Harley. This for me stopped all outdoor activity. I was consumed by riding, and I still am. In those days we stayed in hotels when we went on trips overnight. While we still do that occasionally a few years ago I decided I wanted to get back into the great outdoors. I blame this on geocaching. I got hooked on geocaching and it was like a wild fire. Suddenly I was ready to hike long trails just to find these, I even purchased a kayak just for paddle caches. When I was looking for a nice light packable tent for the bike and backpacking I discovered this site and by default hammocks. Now the only time I use a tent is for rally's where there are no trees usually and my gf isn't quite comfortable in a hammock yet. When i'm solo I use my hammock for all of my sleeping. So I use my hammock when i'm hiking, when i'm paddling, and when I take off for a power trail run in the jeep my pack with hammock is in there as well. I plan to take a few car camping trips this spring in hopes of getting my gf hanging as well. Hell I even bought her a pink hammock! For me the hammock changed everything by not having to sleep on the ground. This site has been great and I have learned so much from it and all of you so thank you.

That being said, the first time I ever purely camped in my life was at a HammockForum group hang, and I have attended annually ever since, due first and foremost to the fine people that I meet there, and a close second, the Dutch oven treats!

I don't enjoy the hike in, but I think without the effort it wouldn't seem as fun, if it was easy, anyone could do it. I just want to be with people I have fun with, in a good spot, with a dog, a water source, and my radio. I want to relax, and just enjoy the experience. I want to remember it by the memories I made, and the fun I had, not by the distance I hiked, or the accomplishments I made...
