I am aspiring to be a hammock hiker. I've been a hiker for the last decade, though I've historically spent my nights on the ground. As much as I've enjoyed learning about hammocks, the true experience is still on the trail for me. I love covering the miles and discovering new things. I'm a sun up to sun down hiker. When I get to camp at night, my plan is to eat and crash for the night. Tents have made the sleeping part moderately difficult in the past. The idea of getting a good, consistent night's rest is super appealing to me. Makes me wonder how many more miles I will be able to cover!

Hike until I'm done hiking. Set up hammock where ever that is. Sleep until I wake up. Repeat. Try that with a tent.

I fastpack, so I guess for me it is miles and the ability to see a larger range of country in the same amount of time, all while carrying a hammock set-up for comfortable sleeping.

I am with latriper on the knee issues and also on the desire to just be out there. I have no desire to cover distances. I tend to go alone, hike in 2 to 4 miles and find a nice place where others don't camp. Spend time setting up, filtering water, gathering firewood and then just snoop around and see what I can see. I imagine if my knees weren't a limiting factor I would cover a little more ground but not much.

I also am very fond of car camping / group hangs. Still get to enjoy all my gear and being in the woods. but also greatly enjoy all the people, the food and the campfire gatherings.

I guess my answer to latriper's original question is - both.

    backpacker/hiker/camper.

i like miles, but often i can't squeeze the time. on a quick trip it's just that; a quick hike to a hang. these are usually afternoon/overnight trips. if i can hit the trail by noon, usually i can get a decent day in before i hang. many days, it's just a couple of miles.

the upside is i like to climb altitude at the end of the day, so there's always a push to a top at the end, usually.

for me, a workout is part of the deal. i wouldn't be doing it if that weren't the case.

Interesting. I love the idea of setting the hammock up early enough to enjoy it but I often find myself trying to make the miles. I set out on week long section hike and within 24 hours I realized that I wasn't mentally in the game so I decided to call the wife and inform her I was heading back. She suggested that I should just camp. I just couldn't imagine being in the hammock for that long. I guess I am a Hammock Hiker.

Hammock hiker here. I enjoy the camping but my hammock is primarily a means to sleep comfortably after the day's hiking.
