I'm definitely a hiker/backpacker. This summer I did a lot of dispersed camping in state and national forests where we'd set up camp for a few days on the edge of a lake and fish and hang out. It was fun, but it left me itching to get on the trail. This confirmed in my mind that I do like both types of camping, but if I had to pick, I will pick the hiking. My style is different in the winter, though.

I prefer to hike/backpack but find that my schedule and folks who go with me place me more often than not, (in fact more often than preferred) in the car camping catagory.

I don't really care about the distance travelled so much but I do like to spend more time on the trail than in camp. I'm a 6 hour-a-night sleeper so, even if I get into camp just before dark, I'm looking at 3-6 hours of excess dark time (depending on the time of year) to burn. I spend that time reading or, on occasion, watching a movie I downloaded to my tablet prior to leaving.

I really appreciate everyone's comments. I certainly agree that no matter the style, being in the woods is the best. Glad I was introduced to the hammock world and Hammock Forums as IMHO, it is the best way to experience any style of camping.

Side note: Gave a couple of my son's scout friends a ride home this afternoon and they were talking about trying to get the scout master to endorse hammock camping for the upcoming camp out this weekend. Guess I may be to blame for that

This most of the time. I like backpacking because its easier to find those hide aways. Cars allow too many yuppies spoil the land. I do like to challenge myself on miles on occasion. And its fun to cut weight and lower pack weight.

Getting to that age where covering distance isn't as important as time spent in the woods with good friends. Sitting around a campfire and sharing an evening in the woods in story telling and companionship is my goal.

I have been working my way through a number of hiking lists in the Northeast so I guess I primarily hike. However, the camping part is a great bonus that comes with the hiking. Whether it is a backpacking trip, or car camping, setting up camp after a day of hiking and spending the night wherever you happen to end the day is both enjoyable and satisfying.

Have never hiked. Only amble. Sometimes wander if I'm really being pressed.

Miles, not that important. Movement, that's more or less the goal. Camp and campfires, great! But that's all for dusk and after dark mostly.

I deer camp throughout the season. That pretty much gives me all the car camping I need for the rest of the year. We pull a small warhorse of an RV down there, but I hang under the stars. They don't get it....or understand why they are so cold on their cots

It's a constant struggle for me - I'm more of a hiker and the whole camping thing just doesn't thrill me. I'm looking for exercise, personally, but sometimes I'll do the car camping thing for camaraderie.

If i have a backpack i'm hiking, not camping. i see no reason to walk into the woods and sit there
if i camp, i got the BarBQ grill, lawn chairs and kayaks with me.
