yep those were the ones I mentioned earlier. the two together in the picture are the SMC rings, I'm leaving the other two Ti ring in, as having them with me could provide useful someday. I personally wouldn't trust my life to an SMC ring if I had to rappel down something.

it would easily work with SMC rings everywhere, and you could even drop the ridge line webbing to a smaller width.

when you are at the top of a cliff with your lunch, and your buddy is at the bottom, and is hungry you might be able to rig something up to lower him a sandwich.

You can also use them setting up a top rope so the rope is not running over rough rock and in place of a biner in a rope recovery repel where you use a rope run through one and doubled over so you use both sides of the rope to repel down then pull the rope through and back down to you at the bottom. It is less costly than a biner in case you have to leave it behind. You can use them as a repel device or belay device. I use them in slack lines. I am sure that there are a bunch of other uses that i am leaving out those are just how i have used them. I've used them the most in slack lines.

I've used the Ti rappel rings in recoverable anchors when rappelling. I have a bunch of them incase they get stuck and I have to leave them. Those smc descender ring scare me too much to use them for anything but hammocks.

Found an article on descending ring use. Like you all wrote, they are essentially leave behind devices, used in pairs, tied to anchors, through which the rappel line runs, allowing easy retrieval of the rope.

Sorry. Didn't mean to sidetrack this DIY thread. Enjoy your new hammock system Hctits!

Really nice system. Just curious, how much does just the suspension weigh by itself? Also, how are you securing the tree strap portion?

no problem at all knotty! The suspension weighs ~23.9 oz
over 3.7oz could be saved by switching out the two Ti rings for the SMC rings.

it is secured to the tree via two rings much like on this page
    http://theultimatehang.com/2013/08/h...d-garda-hitch/

I have the suspension longer than I will probably ever need, but its configured as:

15 feet for tree strap : double SMC rings : 2 feet of webbing : Ti ring : ridge line ~108.5inches : Ti ring : 2 feet of webbing : double SMC rings : 15 feet for tree strap.

the 2 feet of webbing goes around both smc rings, the tree strap is only attatched to one of the two rings.
