    Hanging near Atlanta?

I know we've got a couple of folks from Georgia here, and I was wondering if ya'll knew any places near Atlanta where I can hang without a lot of hassle. I'm looking for places I can set up without a big hike, to muck around and test gear. It would be ideal if it was close to Atlanta, specifically on the northeast side (I live about 5 minutes from Stone Mountain).

I know there are plenty of places within an hour or so for more serious camping trips, but I'm looking for places where I can get a quick overnighter to test out gear, and be back home in time for breakfast. Any ideas?

Athens native here (Go Dawgs!). Don't suppose you have a backyard, huh? Seems like you're concrete-locked. Most of the parks in that area don't allow over-nighters. What about the area around Kennesaw mountain?

Not much help here...just wanted to say hey to a fellow Georgian! Catch ya on the trail!

Stone Mountain will definitely be a good fall back though it has become more touristy over the past several years.

Fort Yargo in Winder is doable.

That's about all I can think of without going further north toward Toccoa and Panther Creek and Tallulah Gorge.

Anywhere in the national forest of course. Also state WMA's (wildlife management areas) have campgrounds that are open when the WMA is open, that is during any state hunting season. During small game (AUG/SEPT-JAN/FEB) you'll have it to yourself mostly. These WMA's are also decent places to mountain bike. I should add that the WMA's that are on leased timber company land do not allow camping outside of the established campgrounds, in the national forest, you may camp anywhere that it isn't posted not to.

If you're willing to come as far as Athens, there's Sandy Creek Park.
They have camping out behind the lake.

There's also camping at Watson Mill Bridge State Park just outside of Athens.
