Splicing - What do you use?

I just commented on another members thread and grew curious of other members methods of splicing.

I'll just copy my method/philosophy from that thread here.

"I use a guitar string for all splicing and - while not the easiest - it has been more than effective. I say "more than" because I also throw the guitar wire in my pack when I go on trips and splice in the backwoods if needed. Very multiuse piece, is a guitar string in the outdoors - and it is nearly weightless."

What do you guys/gals use? Disadvantages/advantages of the different methods?

    Cheers,

I use a fishing liter attached to the carabiner the pros are that it's flexible and has loops for the carabiner the only con is that it's to short for a burry more than 6'' but I could go buy a longer liter until then I'll just use the wire shown in the picture

i use a wire clothes hanger. straighten it out, take a pair of pliers and bend the smallest loop possible to run the shock-cord or amsteel or whatever through but i make sure to dull the edges of the hanger first.

Splicing - What do you use?

I've been looking all over my house the past few nights for something to use. I just got an order of amsteel to make some continuous loops and zing it to make some tarp lines.

Finally last night I found somehow that worked! I found a 18 piece of coax cable in a drawer. . I yanked the ends off, cut off the rubber coating, then stripped the white plastic casing. I was left with a pretty thin solid copper wire, the center piece that sticks out of the ends.
Made 2 continuous loops with buckles on them last night. And made 2 tarp lines with fixed eyes on both ends tonight.
And to think, I came here just to read about hammocks....
Bought a ENO DN, then learned to see, made a DIY DL, now I'm splicing line.... Crazy!

    Here is my splicing tool

Here is what I have used for all of my splicing of Amsteel and liter board line. It was part of a misc needle packet from WallyWorld.

I use a 3 ft piece of 50# SS single strand fishing leader doubled over. at the open end it is folded back 1/2" on itself and has a 1" piece of red shrink tubing over it to keep it together. The red shrink also makes it easier to find. No problem with 2.2 mm Zing-It or larger cordage.

In my pack I carry a 3 ft piece of 30# monofilament doubled over. I find it splices 1/8" Amsteel well and will splice 2.2 mm Zing-It with some patience.

I use a dritz loop turner You can get them at any joanns and most walmarts.

Easy as hell to splice with, from the 1.2mm techline from DIY Gear Supply, to lash/zing it, dynaglide, amsteel etc.

I love it, I could probably splice in my sleep with it if I had to.

Craft wire from WM, maybe $3.00 for a lifetime spool of wire. Or floral wire, same aisle or the next one over. Also carry a piece in the pack.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Thanks for the replies. I had not seen of a few of these, but doesn't that show the creativity of each individual?

The loops turner looks interesting - I think I'll pick one up next time I'm at Joanns

I use a 14 gauge copper ground wire from a scrap 14/2 piece of romex wire for my amsteel and for my braided mason's line a 22 gauge wire I had laying around that I stripped the sheath off of. They both work great.
