I too have never used a quilt. All through my boy scout days I always used a mummy bag and grew quite fond of them. Now that I have found hammocks I still like the mummy bags with some exceptions. My feet stay together in a hammock so the foot box works nicely. On cold nights I still zip it up and use the hood, but outside of the coldest nights the zipper and hood are annoying. I like to tuck in the sides around my body and sometime I can feel the zipper digging into me, not a good feeling. Then the drawstring is dancing around my face making me think there is a bug on me, not a good way to wake up. When I get around to making a top quilt I'll keep the sewn in foot box but lose the other annoyances.
I think they can work just fine in a hammock......

I'm on the side of liking my bag, for a couple of reasons. First, I still move around a bit when I am trying to fall asleep (RLS) and so in those times when it's a little chilly the bag stays on me. Second, there are still times when I'm sleeping on a pad, on the ground. A sleeping bag still works out pretty well for that application.
Both work, but when you need to hit mother nature's restroom the top quilt rules!
I have only ever used a sleeping bag
But I haven't had any trouble with it
Seems to work fine for me

I love my mummy bags when on the ground. They're awkward to wiggle into and zip up in a hammock, though. No problem if used as a top quilt with a pad underneath, though, except for being too big and bulky.
There's always this option...
^^^^ now that's funny^^^^
Even though I make a lot of TQ's for other people, I still use a sleeping bag for a TQ - I like the options of zipping up or not and my sleeping bag is just really comfortable for me.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."
