    Heat-sealing 1.1 ripstop

I am planning to DIY a new hammock using 1.1 ripstop, as I am at the top end of the weight range for it (189-190lbs). What would be the pros/cons of heat-sealing the edges vs sewing a hem? Would I experience less stretch with a hem as the thread would add some structural integrity? Or is it something I shouldn't even worry about, and just heat-seal it, keep it light, and whip it?
I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.

It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.

I wouldn't trust just the heat seal. That might keep it from unraveling but won't help spread the force applied when entering and exiting.

I try to bunch up as much as possible under myself when getting in. That was definitely a concern as well.

Heat sealing will help keep it from fraying but you still need to hem it.. I usually run a lighter along the edge to get the worse of the frays before I hem

Do you tend to do a straight folded hem or a rolled hem?

    Heat-sealing 1.1 ripstop

I usually use a lighter then fold it over. One run of stitches. Then roll again with 2 rows of stitches. Nice and strong.

You only need to seal the cut ends. The self edge or selvedge left by the weaving process is stable. OTOH you might want a hem for strength.
    YMMV

I cut with a soldering iron ($10 at Hobby Lobby or similar) to heat seal as I cut. I use a piece a granite counter top I got for $1 at the Habitat for Humanity store as a cutting board - it's ok but a glass panel would be better.

I hand roll a 1/4" hem as I sew. It's pretty easy. Use the ripstop pattern as a guide. If I'm doing a channel end I pin it as a larger hem tends to stretch and deform more, which will affect the gather and lay.

I don't think I will do channel ends. In fact, since I am just whipping it, I might not even hem the ends.
