    Stuff sacks stitching

Looking for a better approach at stitching the bottom of a sqaure end stuff sack? I have had a couple tear at the seams due to most likely stuffing the bag tightly and forcefully. The tears typically happen at the triangle piece that you cut off to make the bottom square.

Any ideas with stitch length, reinforcement, etc?

Trying to make these scout proof which is nearly impossible

Do _not_ cut off the triangle. Fold it over to the inside of the sack. Extra reinforcement for the bottom and no cut seam to ravel. Easy peasy.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

If you leave the triangle, even if the 'squaring' seam fails completely you are left with a 'simple' flat stuff sac. (And no, I don't worry about the extra few grams in that uncut triangle...)

On occasion, I've run an extra line of stitching after folding the triangle flat to the sac bottom. It can require 'creative bunching' of the excess fabric to get the bottom lying flat on the sewing machine, especially if it's a tall, narrow sac.
    Probably unnecessary anyway.

Not that it will increase the strength, but if you want to make it easier to un-stuff, sew a handle into the triangle stitching while you're at it....

I recommend making it out of something stronger than the paper napkin trial version in the photo.

    samjaynes,

I hope you got the information you needed from the previous posts, because I have no advice to offer....

I'm finally remembering to tell you how much I like your avatar. I smile every time I see it. I love children's movies, and I think "UP" is my all-time favorite.

    Re: Stuff sacks stitching

If silnylon I cut the triangle. Its not any different than the long cut edge I run down the entire side of the sac. Haven't had a problem yet. Just don't cut to close.
