    Argon & Apex Top Quilt

My order of 2.5 oz Apex arrived today. Man this stuff looks just like the cheap insulation you can get at the fabric store, I hope it works better. It is pretty light, two yards at roll width weight 10oz (not that i'm going to use that much). Now I just need my order of Argon to come in and it's thread injector time. To be continued...

    Argon & Apex Top Quilt

I used 6 oz apex in a UQ. The stuff is great. Lightweight and actually compresses fairly small. I have a feeling you will like it.

After having used a 2.5 APEX quilt (that was just a smidge too small for me), I'd definitely say that the rating of 45* F to 50* F suggested by its CLO rating is pretty accurate.

I'd be comfy pushing it to 40* F, but I'm an human furnace.

Fairly easy stuff to work with. Just be careful with your scissors and seam ripper around that 10d fabric; I learned the hard way that it's easy to cut with a sharp (well, I used NoBul1 rather than Argon, but I'd assume they're pretty close in characteristics).

Hope it goes well for you!

UPDATE: so my fabric showed up yesterday and came in the smallest envelope i've ever seen fabric shipped in. Four yards at 60 wide weighed 4.7oz on my scale. Today I had a little time to get things started. I got my fabric and Apex cut to shape and sewn together. I had to quit for the day and come to work but hopefully will get to finish it up tonight. Pictures for follow.

Ok, I finished my top quilt and I must say that it was alot easier than I thought it would be. Some specs: Total time involved 3 1/2 hours, total cost was right at $60 and finished dimensions are 70" long by 45" at the head and a 16" wide sewn footbox. Total weight in an Argon stuff sack is 9.8 oz!!!! Now on to the picutres.

First thing I did was double over the four yards of Argon and cut it to 75Lx48Whead 38Wfoot

Then I laid out the 2.5oz Apex and cut it to the same shape as the shell

once both were cut I pinned them together (twice because I had the wrong side folded in) and sewed them together on three sides

after sewing I trimmed the edges as close the stitching as I safely could and this is what was trimmed off

Then I pulled the quilt right side out and ironed down a strip of material to cover and close off the foot end.

then I sewed the footbox closed. I chose this because in the three years I have been hanging I have never once even thought about using my quilts opened flat, plus it's lighter than all those snaps and cord locks.

and finally I whipped together a simple stuff sack and here she is

All in all this was a great project and I can't wait to make a matching under quilt. Thanks for looking.

    Looks great.

So what are your thoughts on the Argon now that you have worked with it?

I don't think the argon was much more different than 1.1, but I did have trouble getting my stitch tension just right so the fabric wouldn't bunch.
All in all I didn't find it intimidating, just took my time.

Very nice! I think apex is the way to go for ratings above 45*. Perfect combo of light, durable, and cheap.
