hammock webbing suspension

hey guys need help,
all the local camping stores (sigh

) sell the 1"webbing used in backpack straps. they say non weight bearing. outside of tow straps, running out of options up here for readily available gear. any suggestions? I Like purchasing from the folk on here, but they still need to ship to Ontario, takes time and sometimes you need ASAP.

I assume you are talking about tree straps or cinch buckle straps for a hammock? Strapworks, Arrowhead Equipment, DutchwareGear just to name a few have both of these in stock. Cheers

Tie down straps that you can buy from just about any hardware/auto store will work great. I bought a 4 pack of the cam style for $6 at a local parts store. I just took off the cam and sawed off the hook and I had a nice new set of tree straps.

Make sure they are polyester, not nylon! Nylon stretches too much.

And don't use the backpack webbing!!! I had to make straps in a rush and picked that stuff up - not thinking - and fortunately they held my gf through the night, but broke when a 200+lb man tried out the hammock!

The stuff for the straps is flat webbing and will stretch. Climbers use tubular webbing and there is next to no stretch in it. A friend of mine did an unscientific test with a slap strap, we knew it would stretch, at one end and webbing at the other. The slap strap stretched as expected, the tubular webbing did not.

Tubular nylon webbing stretches over time as well. It's nylon and its for climbing so some stretch is expected and necessary. I've used it in the past and if you use it short lengths of it on the trees in conjunction with whoopie slings it's not as bad.

I've only ever ordered polyester webbing from the cottage vendors here. I know it takes time but I can never find it anywhere in Canada. Even the tie downs ratchet straps at Canadian Tire and Home Depot are either nylon or do not say what they are made of on the packaging.

I bought a 4 pack of ratcheting tie down straps from northern tool for $9. Link is below. When I got there, they were packaged in a little netting bag with a sinch string. I was looking for a lightweight back for my bugnet and that's going to fit the bill perfectly.
