    Dealing with sap

I just got back from the BWCA. Most of the tree options for hanging were balsam firs, which tend to ooze sap like crazy, and got sap on the tree straps. I had the hammock (WBBB) in a bishop bag, so I'd leave the straps outside the bag and put the whole thing in a dry bag. The sap's still on the straps, although not as sticky as it originally had been.

Any ideas for cleaning? As they're now not as sticky, but just have a whitish residue, is it something you'd even bother cleaning?

What for? You'll just have to do it again. That's their sole purpose, so let 'em get sappy. Makes for good fire excelerant and a good bandage in a pinch!

    Dealing with sap

I usually leave it, rub some dirt on fresh sap and you're good to go! But I have used hand sanitizer and it works like a charm if you wanna get that sticky stuff off.

Just dealt with the same issue last week. Liberal amount of mineral spirits and a cotton rag cleaned mine up in ~ 15 minutes.

    Good Luck

PS. I am OCD regarding my gear and couldn't live with myself if I left it.

Is sap edible or poisonous? ....Just a minor brain fart; not like I'm going to be sucking on my webbing or anything like that.

Depends on the tree it came from. Most red sap is fine, it's the white saps that are many times poison, you have to know your tree. I would'nt go eating it, but if it's good enough for open wounds...

I boil the straps if they're really nasty. Doesn't take long for the sap to come loose. Not a rolling boil, more of a simmer is all it takes.

But dirt rubbing is best in the field.
