Thanks, y'all. I appreciate the ideas...except for maybe the "eating" part. I'll take a pass on that.
Until needed, of course.

+1 more on the rubbing dirt on it, then making sure you store the straps separately.

That's my stuff sack I made for my hammock and suspension. I love it, keeps the gunky stuff off my hammock.
Thanks for the idea. The gunk on the hammock is definitely the primary concern.
I had the same problem after a BWCA trip. I really like strap and buckle suspension, but I switched to whoopies and tree straps so I could store the straps separately in a zip lock when they get covered with sap.
I have pine sap on my PU coated Hennessy Hex tarp. Any ideas for getting it off? I've tried warm water and a drop of baby shampoo. Then tried gently scraping with my thumb nail. That removed some, but makes me nervous scraping on my tarp. Someone suggested mineral spirits, but is that safe on PU coated and sil tarps? I thought mineral spirits is what silicone is dissolved in when making silnylon.

I worried about it when I was new to hanging. Anymore I really don't care. What I do to keep it from getting all over everything is I carry a old used USPS priority tyvek envelope. If my straps get really nasty I just take them off and put them in the bag. It was free and weighs next to nothing. Plus I use it for a stake/line bag.
It's only an addiction if you're trying to quit
