Take a look at my gallery to see what Duffy did for us. I don't know if it'll work for you or your wife, but I love it.

    Sweet dreams!

Your welcome. I just love multiuse items and this is definitely one of them, and it looks really good. Great job, Duffy.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

dammfast, thanks for pointing me toward the corner mount idea! I will certainly try to work that into one of the rooms, using a corner cabinet with the opposite hang points being a decorative shelf. This is going to take much longer than I had expected, but I think I will be able to do it well enough that the wife will accept and even enjoy the new furniture.

Thanks for the help and when I do finally get around to finishing one of these I will post up some pics so others can adapt it.

What if you used some type of wrought Iron wall decoration? Like a candle holder or hook. It would of course have to be HEAVY DUTY or custom built, and then it would be right out in the open and multi functional. Hidden in plain sight.

What did you use to mount the shelf into your walls? It doesn't look like those are the usual deck screws people mount a 2x4 spreader bar with. Thanks again,
    Caz
On the inside wall we drilled into the studs then used 6 3/8" lag screws per shelf. The outside wall is sheetrock, furring strip, then concrete block. We drilled right into the concrete block and used 3 300lb wall anchors per shelfhttp://www.homedepot.com/p/WingIts-W...4#.UgrPLdLvttg. The shelves themselves are oak, so it's pretty strong.

Mine are not hidden. When people notice them, I just raise an eyebrow and grin. Let them wonder.

I've never really thought about hiding it. I just use the 2 support columns in the basement. 15 feet apart

Plenty of options in this thread that you could work with. Mine has been up for over a year with no issues to date and could easily be turned into an attractive shelf with minimal effort and cheaply.

    Finally some pics

I know it has been a while, and after thinking about this for a few weeks and getting the boss to approve the design, I have finally finished the first shelf. (Eventually I will have to finish up 3 matching shelfs to "balance out the wall for her

I ended up making the shelf just long enough to catch 3 studs. There are two screws in each of the outside studs, and 3 when you include the screws in the pad eye for the center stud.

sorry if this is upside down... don't know why it saved that way.

    Enjoy!
