    Signatures - on or off

I go back and forth on this. I've just turned signatures off again, so apologies if I appear to have forgotten your name, political or religious preference, or current manifestations of whimsy. Just so I wouldn't be accused of having a double standard, I've removed my own signature, so others won't be forced to read it.

My opinion is signatures are kind of frivolous. And a lot of people let them get out of control, and way too long. I've got no problem with this move, but then again, I didn't have one to begin with.

I tend to ignore people's signatures.
In no way do I think they are "forcing" people
    to read them.

Were you offended by others signatures?
Or by how they were used?
Or did someone complain about your signature?

None of the above. I just find them distracting. I don't have strong feelings either way, which is why I've changed my mind more than once.

Pros: A few have funny quotes.
I actually learn things from some, like what are the missing vowels in "hppyfngy".
    Some have real names.
A few have links I might want to follow, such as cottage industries.

Cons: I'm not good at ignoring them.
There are lots of them, and the level of distraction is cumulative.
Some seem to be telling me what I ought to think, or worse yet, what I ought to eat.

    YMMV

I also turned them off. Some are too long, some I find annoying, and I don't really need to see any of them more than once.

Essentially because of their repetitiveness they function as spam to my eyes. (And not the nice, meaty kind...)

I agree that some have gotten out of control and I'll even admit mine being one of those, in the past. But for the most part, they do not bother me at all and I kind of enjoy them.

Its Liberty in action, and I applaud you for availing yourself of that Liberty, rather than taking any action that might cause a fellow member to lose the ability to avail himself of his. Your reading, your choice. Its when the choice is made for us that problems arise, whether its limiting the ability of people to post signatures or not offering us the choice to shut them off.

If you don't like what's on TV change the channel. If you don't like what's on someone's sig, shut your signatures off. If you don't to do that because you like some signatures and not others and you complain to the mods about the ones you don't like, then you are the one trying to force your opinion on people, not the guy with the sig you don't like.

I ignore most signatures. However, in some cases they seem to be used to circumvent prohibited topics in the HF Terms of Service. You may not be able to post a thread about the prohibited topic, but you can create a signature that links to your blog about prohibited topics.

It seems the mods have no problems with this, nor with quotations from religious texts. However, I could see where it might be a problem if your signature includes inflammatory religious quotations that address topics that are prohibited.
