Wink Off Topic or Trivial Posts

I think that it would be great, to be able to view a thread
with as little distractions as possible. We must remember that
a greater number of people will be viewing on mobile devices,
and scrolling through page after page is quite laborious.

Is there a way that we can make our Hammock information
easier to find in the threads, while maintaining the originality
and group feel of Hammock Forums? I believe that there is.

I think it would be great if there was an option for the OP to choose,
which hides off-topic and trivial posts. Posts could be flagged by the
OP, or by thread readers (not sure which would work better), and those
could be hidden from the thread. It might show that Person XYZ Posted,
but that it is hidden. Readers can have a toggle to show hidden replies
in case they want to read 100% of the replies on a post.

If we were able to hide the posts that do not add to the conversation,
then it would reduce read time, and become a much more informative
forum. Replies that go greatly off topic, or just contain single line replies
such as "Good Post" "Great Job" etc do not need to be read by every
single reader (but can be there still to support the OP).

Granted, Shug's threads wouldn't be as long without the multitude of
"You da man Shug!" and "Way to Go Shug" posts, but that just means
that we'd get through to the great information a little quicker.

While this might not be an issue for desktop home pc users, this can
greatly benefit our mobile users who struggle on slow connections to
load every single page of our forum. The more concise and useful
that we can make this forum, the better I think it could be.

    What do you all think?

Shall I apologize for my verve?
I like my "You da man Shug!" and "Way to Go Shug".....trivial as it may seem. My goal has always been to Inspire. To get folks to enjoy hammocks and the woods and not get to caught up on perfection. So some times the answers are short.
Don't sweat the small stuff and get out there and practice and test and flourish is my reason to be here.

Off topic or trivial, like this thread?

This site is well organized and informative. Showing support for quality threads and content is not bad. You can read the first post and then move on if you'd like, right? I can read a bit deeper into the thread if I'd like, right? You can also add those not contributing to your level by adding them to your ignore list. Try it out. Click my screen name and select add to ignore list. I'm likely not up to your information sharing needs.

You da man Shug. Friends from other sites led me here with your videos. Shortening my learning curve exponentially! Thank you.

I think that if you go to Mom and ask her for something you want, and she thinks about it and decides that you can't have it, that it's poor form to then go to Dad and ask for the same thing, only phrased in a different way, in the hopes of getting a different outcome.

But to more directly address the question:

I think that it shouldn't be the responsibility of any one poster, be they the original poster or not, to decide what does or does not "add to the conversation". If a post detracts from or derails the topic of the thread, there are a multitude of ways to get it back on track, by either other posters or moderators, short of giving individuals the power to decide that a particular post has no value, and should be hidden from sight - be it 'for the good of the conversation', to "greatly benefit our mobile users", or otherwise.

Whether you call it a '-1' or 'dislike' button, or a hide button, or a 'I don't like what you said' button ... it all amounts to the same thing.

I view the site as a conversation around a campfire, a chance to meet and talk to friends, discuss ideas, and spend time thinking of something other than all the other things going on in the world.
In my opinion, speeding up the conversation by hiding threads takes us away from that atmosphere.
Granted it would allow you to speed thru the threads, but I'm not sure that is why we are here..

I like the conversational style of this forum. It is a bit like sitting around the campfire. Omitting posts would clealy detract from that. Besides, Shug is too large a personality to be confined to a hand held device.

    Short answer- I disagree w/Trambo.aka.sail1987
