Ahhh, thanks Gresh. I had done a search but didn't come up with anything.
Someone in that thread suggested just using the thread rating tool,
and that is nice, but I think that we can rate replies also.

It's good to see that it has been talked about before.

    Trolling?
    I don't understand your point,
or even if it is relevant to this conversation.

Your recent post is one that I would "Strike",
and a great example of why this should be initiated.

Thanks for helping me prove point in case.

Part of what makes this community great are the choices that have been made about how it is guided. And no matter what some of the detractors in this thread have said, that has been done most carefully. The emphasis here has been, and hopefully always will be, on quality posts.

We haven't adopted a lot of superfluous software features because we don't feel that they would add value to the mission of HF. It's not because we're archaic...it's not because we're resistant to change....it's not because we're hard-headed. It's because we're focused. And that focus has built the community that so many people here love so well.

This topic has indeed come up a couple of times before. And then, like now, it was considered. But ultimately, nothing has changed since the last time it was mentioned. It's an interesting idea, but it ~would~ affect the interactions of HF members in a few ways, and we don't really feel those are positive ways.

If you want to thank someone for a helpful post....why not take the time to say so in the thread. Or even send them a PM saying so, if you'd rather it be less visible. And if you think an idea is great....make a post saying so, along with the reasons why and how that you're going to incorporate that idea into your own hammocking experience.... It's that kind of interaction - detailed, positive, and personal - that build a sense of community. Far more than clicking a button.

On the flip side, I skip many conversations on the board because there is so much "Agreed" or "I feel the same" etc. A thumbs up type of mechanism would reduce some of the superfluous post as well as rate post that people find most interesting. I know this wont change your minds, as it seems you have them already made up... But I think there are valid reasons to why this would be a good idea, and possibly more good reason than there are bad (or at least bad ones I can think of)...

I 100% agree with this post, I would also like to add,
that the only statistic that is show is post count.
This does nothing to show how useful a person's posts are,
just how many they post. This does not show whether they
are good or well thought out posts.

I think that having a Plus and a Minus system would give credit
to the members who do make this a great place.

Sure, some people would play favorites, and some would troll
with the feature, but generally it would be a fun addition and it
would showcase some of the most powerful users.

It was not the first time that the subject was brought up,
that women were given the right to vote. However, eventually
the correct decision was made. I am glad to have made my views
apparent, even if the moderators do not agree.

As for my comment that people are resilient to change, I do not
focus this at the moderators, as they have important decisions to
make, but more towards members who do not want to see things
change for fear of loss of this great forum.

First off let me lay a bit of ground work for my opinion on the matter.
I post on several forums currently, and have posted on many others in the past. I've been a forum moderator and administrator of several forums. Many of the forums I've been a part of use a post ranking system and it seems to cause two things to occur in every instance I've witnessed thus far.
    1. Forum Warrioring: People wanting thier score to be higher than the next guys even though there is no reward.
    2. Less personal: People being to just push a button instead of writing a few words, friendships aren't formed nearly as often as they are here.

Personally I wouldn't want to see either of these things happen here. This place is so awesome and special because of the personal connections built, even if just through a few words typed on a computer. After all you know more about me now than if I had just clicked a down vote button, and you now know the reason I would have clicked that button. Whether we agree or not on the final result, we can at least now understand where the other is coming from.
