    Hanging at Scout Camps

There is indeed a first time for everything; in this case, my first outdoor hangs, in my DIY hammock setup.. complete with $10 Harbor Freight tarp..

Spent 3 nights with each son at their respective cub/boy scout camp - here was my setup:

My son had his own DIY hammock and a borrowed Kelty tarp - and he found the ideal spot 10' from the lake:

Weather was gorgeous, cooler than typical - was glad for the PLUQ. I saw one other hammock at Boy Scout camp, though they left before I got a chance to say hello!

Looks like a nice setup. I too have recently been able to hang at our troops outings. Once at an OA ordeal and then again during summer camp. I really enjoy it. My son has a hammock now but hasn't tried it yet. We will be doing some DIY stuff to get it ready. He needs a bug net and cover.

I hang at every Scout camp... each month with my Troop and at Summer camp. Hung at OA events and even at Wood Badge.
The only place that Scouting will not allow hammocks is at Philmont. Hope that will change one day.

I do the same thing. Most of us adults now hammock. We did hammocks at the last three summer camps, the middle one being sea base out island adventure. We love it. We have most of the scouts on board too. As a matter of fact, we may be doing another order for materials soon.

    Hanging at Scout Camps

Sorry about the blank above...still figuring out a mobile app for forum responses...

I've been hanging a BoyScout outings for a couple of years here in Louisiana and at summer camps like Woodruff and Camp Rainey Mtn. Love it. Suddenly 4 other boys and adults are either buying hammocks or asking me what to buy to get started.

DIY as above seems like best/cheapest option, but what do you guys recommend for bug protection? Are you sewing nets, using head nets, or draping mesh without sewing over ridge lines?

Also, would I be correct in recommending the Hennessey Scout as the best and cheapest full kit, so to speak, at $99 for tarp, hammock with net and basic suspension?

I sewed all of the hammocks for the troop, after we bought all of the material. For bug protection, I used a Mombasa bug net that i found directions for turning into a tube net on here somewhere. I made my own tarp, the rest of the troop uses blue tarps for now. That may be another project we try, tarps.

Here is thread that makes bug nets real cheap. I'm going to try this myself.
