I don't know if I agree with that. If a pad is not important, then neither is an underquilt. Both have pros and cons. Just a few reasons someone might choose a pad over an underquilt...

Pads are not susceptible to moisture, while underquilts are

CCF pads can be really light for the amount of insulation they provide

Pads can help eliminate shoulder squeeze in narrower hammocks like bridges

Pads can serve as a frame for your pack, thereby doing double duty. Multi-functional gear is nice.

Of course there are TONS of reasons to choose an underquilt over a pad, too... just don't be so quick to discount the lowly pad. You can get a whole lot of insulation out of ten dollars worth of foam from walmart.

If you have the right Hammock for you a pad just gets in the way (warm weather)

In the colder months the Pad is added insulation along with a underquilt you can hang in colder temperatures with out the dreaded CBS (Cold Butt Syndrome)
    As stated Summer not winter

Im not saying throw the Pads away, and yes Pads are cheaper.
I was letting all the new hangers know in the Summer Pads are not needed to sleep in a Hammock.

That's not altogether true. Some people need and use pads with temps as high as 70. It is very personalized thing.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Rev is right, but I'm with you on that one SWW! If I have a good reason to leave a pad at home; it's staying. Warm weather does allow me to do that. I can go without a pad, or something, under my feet down into the 50s. Beyond that, I gotta have something.

Don't get me wrong... the only pad I plan to use above 35* is my Super Shelter pad. Even below I'm going to be looking for alternatives. But particularly with new hangers I think we need to be careful to allow a lot of latitude. That's all the more reason to set up and play with the gear where we can do it with safety.
