How do you finish the end of a gatherred end?

I have made over a dozen hammocks so far, but still find the gather tricky. I am heads down making hammocks for the scouts, and decided to make them with a channel end (at this point), and cinch them with some 550 cord. However, I have seem a few pictures of people adding something similiiar to a nail knot below the "mushroom" of the gatherred channel. Do you use the cord from the channel, seperate cordage, is it really needed or adds any value?

I simply tie the end in an overhand knot after gathering...no cordage required and makes Ann instant attachment point

I've actually just used the larks head on my ucr to keep the end of the hammock together (no whipping at all) and I've not had any problems. When you load the hammock it locks that larks head down pretty well.
If you ain't havin' fun, you're doin' it wrong

Thanks - I did the zip tie on the Hennessey Asym I made a year or so ago, worked well.

Overall it sounds like additional wraps of cordage is not needed.

You're going about this the hard way. In another post you indicated you'd be using cinch buckles. Use an amsteel continuous loop larks headed to the buckles (with a few wraps to keep it centered) and pass the loop through the end channel and back through itself to form another larks head similar to this.

Yes, I am looking at cinch buckles as an option (Full whoopie slings would be my first option, but would cost more (looking at a 300ft spool option)).

I did exactly what you mentioned with my Trek Light double last year - worked great.

If I went the cinch buckle route and didnt not get amsteel to make the continous loop, my approach was to sew a 18" section of webbing to one end of the sliding cinch buckle, and attach through a larks head to the hammock. Not sure if the channel will be big enough to thread webbing through it.

Thanks for the reminder of this approach.

I just whipped the ends of mine with de-cored paracord and it holds just fine. Probably the cheapest and easiest method for a gathered-end.

The whoopie goes right over the end and holds on tight below the whipping.

I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.

It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.

i think what confused me is that there is the regular gathered end (loose material), the channel end (sewn channel with rope through it) and then there is what i've heard called the warbonnet method where you run a thin rope through the channel, but then roll it back on itself and tie off like a gathered end. sort of like a hybrid. you don't need reinforced stitching because when you fold it back, it creates that mushroom shape that you mentioned, which is perfect for larks heading a continuous loop or a whoopie sling.

That would depend on how large you make the channel.

A whoopie sling can also be larks headed through the channel.
