    King Size Winter Tarp

Hello all! This new tarp is a DIY "king size" winter version. Extra long and extra wide and extremely strong.

The one I made last week was a more "minimal" design : https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ad.php?t=76639

This one is just the opposite - a ridge 136" long, a width of 128" and 164" from door edge to door edge. Maximum coverage!

Previously I said I would try using just one layer of grosgrain on the top ridge - that didn't work very well - it sagged pretty badly. I added another layer like the first one and it cured the sag. I also stayed with 2 welded rings on each end of the ridge even though I'm sure one would suffice.

The weight without lines is 21.1oz.

I still used Scotts winter tarp design, but tweaked it a little. I added an extra 1/2" to the cat curve depths and used 1" triangles instead of the 1/2" beastee dee rings I was going to use and of course made it longer and wider.

Side panel pull outs will be added later today to complete the package.

I highly recommend the tarp patterns Scott has at DIY Gear Supply.

The nice thing is that the materials only cost $9.00 more than the smaller tarp. I'm still a little torn between "good enough" coverage and "coverage no mater what".

Got the pull outs done. What a pain. I suggest sewing the pull outs much earlier in the construction as moving a big tarp around in circles is no fun what so ever.

On a good note - it's raining! We'll see how the tarp holds up.

The last picture was hurried so the tarp wasn't pulled out much - thats why there's slack in it.

Very nice my friend - been looking at making one of Scott's tarp design. Couple questions - Where did you get your material (type?) at? Can you post a picture of the pack size?

    Thanks -

Bonus question - Why grossgrain on the ridgeline? Why not a flat-felled or rolled hem?

Hey Sam - I normally get everything from Diy Gear Supply, but Scott only has navy blue in the seconds pile. I wanted a gray syl (2nds) and got it at Quest Outfitters : http://www.questoutfitters.com/coate...20OZ%20RIPSTOP

As soon as it's done drying and the seam sealer sets, I'll post a picture of it packed next to a nalgene bottle for scale.

I used grosgrain for the ridgeline because I can cut and hem the 2 pieces before putting them together - also it's so much easier (for me at least) to sew the pieces together with the folded grosgrain - it has always come out perfect so far.. Warbonnet uses something similar on his tarps. I put this tarp together in less than 5 hours. The entire ridge only takes 30 minutes to make and only takes up half the space on my work bench.

The link at the first post on page 3 describes the ridge and how to sew it. It's extremely strong - no sag at all in the middle and adds very little weight. I used 1" grosgrain (it's what I have) but 3/4 would work better and be lighter.
