Video: Simple Hammock Suspension Options with Continuous Loop

Warning, this post I made this weekend is pic-heavy. As I was cleaning and re-packing all the hammocks from our Boy Scout 50-miler, I thought I'd run through some of the simple hammock suspension options we used with continuous loops.

I didn't come prepared to outfit the entire troop in hammocks, but by the end of day 2 I had scrounged enough equipment to get everyone hanging, most double-bunking.

The video (below) pretty much sums up the options, but I have a few more tips and explanations on the full blog post if you're interested.

Re: Video: Simple Hammock Suspension Options with Continuous Loop

Really great video summarizing the choices out there, some of which I hadn't seen before.

Do you have any recommendations on the type of rope to use for the loop? I saw on your UltimateHang site where using Amsteel on Amsteel may be too slippery in some scenarios.

Second, besides doing the continuous loop, do you have suggestions on a knot to hold the loop together? I really try to avoid splicing... Just call me lazy.

Super informative and easy to follow, even for an old girl scout who didn't learn much about knots! Wish we had been able to do some 50 milers and sleep in hammocks when I was a kid. Thanks!

For a continuous loop, most manufacturers just tie an overhand knot. I've also used a figure-8 knot, a double-fisherman's knot, and a two-strand diamond knot. Having used the overhand knot now for a while with lots of people, there's really no reason to use anything else (safety wise), except for peace of mind or decorative reasons. However, if I were to make a loop out of Amsteel, I'd splice or do a knot with more binding power like the two-strand diamond or double-fisherman.

I can ask some of the manufacturers what rope they use, but my guess would be polyester or polypropylene. It looks like 4mm or so.

You can really use any number of rope types so long as they are safety rated for the load (safe working load).

There are a few cottage vendors who sell ready-made Amsteel loops, AHE comes readily to mind.

Hammocks that I take backpacking, I typically switch out the thicker, slightly heavier rope loops with a smaller 7/64" Amsteel loop. Part of this is being a gram weenie, but also because I have been using the Dutch Whoopie Hook, which works with 7/64 rather nicely (anything bigger won't fit).

Very nice. Use the continuous loops on most of my hammocks. Offers a lot of flexibility.

Thanks for putting this together. Very informative.

Try the double or triple fisherman knot. By far less elegant than splicing but workable. A disadvantage of knots is that they create an obstacle on the continuous loop.

Great examples of using the cont.loop ! I feel that I spend a lot more time playing with my hammocks than sleeping in them

True! Playing with, making, and accessorizing. Wait, all-of-a-sudden I feel like I'm a 13-year-old with a Barbie doll.

    1. Great video...thumbs up!

    2. Thanks for making me feel like an idiot...I never realized that you could do a larkshead with the loop already fixed to the hammock. Duh!

    3. My head hurts...

    Thanks!
