    Platform Camping, anyone?

I noticed Platform camping at CHATTAHOOCHEE BEND State Park. It looks like there are 2 poles for a hammock. Am I seeing what I think I am seeing? If so, this is awesome. A wood deck with a 6x6 on each side to set up your tarp and hammock?

Anyone have any experience with platform camping? The description does not mention hammocks.

I would be VERY careful about using any pole to hang from
when suspended on a platform. It is possible that this is just
for a tarp, and is not meant to hold a hammock. If there is not
a cross-beam, it is possible that it is not load bearing.

This might be meant just for ground dwellers to be a little further
up off the ground, but still on a hard surface. A call to the state
park would pique my interest. It would be GREAT if they had elevated
    places to hang from.

The campsites along the Suwannee river had covered and screened in platforms that had hooks for hammocks. They even had outlets for phone charging and ceiling fans.

I've hammocked on the covered floating platforms of the Bartram Canoe Trail, in the Tensaw Delta. Here's a couple of stock photos of them. Hammocks worked very nicely indeed on the platforms.

I agree with sail1987 that care and good judgement should be used before hanging from poles that don't have a crossbar.

Wow! I love those covered floating platforms! I kayak and hammock camp on the Green River (KY). But the Green River Paddle Trails don't have anything like that that I have ever seen. I have rented cabins in the past or obtained permission from river side properyy owners to hang.

If there are hooks I would assume they are thinking lounging hammocks instead of sleeping one's but I see no reason not to sleep that way. Who knows, enlightenment happens. ;-)

I've done some platform camping along the Roanoke River in eastern North Carolina. Roanoke River Partners sponsors a number of platforms ranging from basic to palatial.

Actually GA DNR has begun installing poles for hammocks at a few of our state parks, Chattahoochee Bend being one of them. The timing of this thread is ironic...I was planning to head down there tomorrow afternoon just to check out the platform sites (Chatt Bend is about 15 miles from our house). Of course, if the skeeters aren't horrendous I may have to test the poles to make sure they're suitable...

    Great news STEVE D!

I am headed up to NC tomorrow and have decided to split it up. I am overnighting at CHATT BEND. If you see a guy in a hammock under a SUperfly stop by and say hello. I probably will not get there until 4 or 5.

Thanks for the info, great looking sites!

Maybe not, they have a 2 nite min for reservations....$40...have to think on this one.

Aha, one night okay for walk ups. I am going to roll the dice and hope I can get a walk up spot.
