    hammock on a hill side

just wanted to share a lesson from this past week end.
a friend & i did a one night backpacking trip in linville gorge, nc.
he found a place that we could hang near the edge of a small cliff next to the linville river. i guess i really knew it wasn't the best place to be hanging out for the evening & next morn because of the soft soil. but my friend was really excited about such a great place to hang & he hadn't been backpacking since last year... so i went along.
when we broke camp next day, i could see how our feet had messed up the area we had used. next hard rain, some of that dirt is going to wash into the river.
i knew better than to camp on a such fragil place, but gave in to the temptation. i'm sharing this in hopes that someone else will learn from my mistake.

Just so you're not the only one lynched by the "LNT mafia", I'll stick my neck out here too...

I've camped in places like that, and not always in a hammock (much lower impact) and not always out of necessity. My take on the spirit of LNT is that it should be the NORM - something always in the back of your mind. As long as you care about the areas we love to visit and are mindful of the damage you do, I think you'll make the right choice. An every-once-in-a-while departure, whether necessary or just plain NICE (like your example) isn't going to wreck the entire system, as long as you really believe in the philosophy overall.

Now I sit and wait for the firing squad

i appreciate you're supportive, soft handed view, but it really was irresponsible of me to go ahead & camp there when i really knew better

Thanks for sharing Tim. We have all compromised while in the woods. I think BB nailed it down. Great shot of the river. I love LG. Last time, I saw a huge tire in the river at the bottom of the gorge. Im talkin, dump truck sized tire. No idea how it got there. So, in retrospect, I think your fine.

When BB and I were at Uwharrie, he picked up some trash at yall's favorite camp site and packed it out (I think it was really because his pack was too small). Little things like that always help out.
