    Side tie out Qs

I'm curious how other people tie off the side tie outs on their HHs. Mine came with a mitten clip on the end which I have clipped back on the little ring (both ends are attached to the hammock body) creating a loop which I throw over a tent spike in the ground. This works well but requires two extra tent spikes (or sticks) and it seems like there must be a simpler way to do this.

I'm mystified by the mitten clips on the ends of the tie outs. What does Hennessy want you to clip those to?

I'm using a Hennessy Hex fly.

Do any of you hang without the tie outs?

I clip mine to the tarp tie out points at the tarp. The little plastic rings. You can use the hammock with out the tie outs. The tie outs just help spread the hammock open for a better lay. I know some of the more experienced members will have even better ideas. That's just the way I do it.

When using the Hex, I will clip the side tie outs to a prusik knot on two diagonally opposed tarp tie outs.

When using the the smaller asym tarp, I will do just the opposite and clip the tarp tie outs to prusik knots on the hammock tie outs. This allows me to reach out and adjust the tarp on the zipper side while in the hammock.

    Re: Side tie out Qs

I have had a Hennessy Hex tarp for about 9 months and I wondered what the mitten hooks were for. It never occurred to me that they were for hammock pullouts! When I first got it, my hammock didn't have pullouts, but I added them later. It does require using two extra stakes, sometimes, unless I use one that I'm already using for the tarp. I don't think I would use the mitten hooks for the pullouts, because I love using my tarp in porch mode.

Thanks for the responses. I had not considered clipping them to the tarp nor did I notice rings on the tarp. Thanks for that.

Prusiks make sense too. Such a handy knot. Thanks!

I usually tie mine to tent stakes and then trip over them when I get up to pee.

Did you take the mitten clips off? They got in the way when I tried tying them off. I was probably using a dumb knot.

I don't use the tie-outs - never saw the benefit. They're like a slingshot that can launch a tarp stake right into your butt (or tarp).

If I were gonna use them I'd use the clips to attach to the tarp (though I don't like that setup either).

Prusiks are handy if you have a loop. They work best with the loop made of smaller cord and the standing part a thicker rope. I'd recommend a double fisherman's bend to make the loop.

I use a single prusik to tension my fly, which I hang separately from the hammock with a structural ridgeline.

I honestly think i have it figured out....

But why doesn't Hennessey give better instruction if i am right....

With the asym tarp notice it has glove clips where the tarp guide out line attaches??? What are they for?????

    So, here goes.....

tie up the hammock, stake out fly guidelines, then take the hammock shock cord "pullout", stretch out and clip "the middle" of that shock cord into the glove clip on the fly "corner", double back the shock cord to the hoop attached to the hammock and clip glove clip on shock cord to hoop where that shock cord originated.....

I do not know if correct, but that shock cord doubled back is the perfect length exactly when doubled back, it logically uses all the pieces, i.e. all the glove clips, hoops, cords, etc....

And honestly this spreads the hammock the best i have found when empty and weighted....gives it that true asym diamond shape.

Honestly if it wasnt intended to set up this way I do not know what could have been a more perfectly ironically build....it is literally like perfect...
