    New Insulated Hammock

    http://www.hammockforums.net/gallery....php?i=669&c=4

I've just completed my second down hammock similar to Risk's and Just Jeff's. It weighs just over half a kg and has about 4 inches of loft under my butt.
I'm pretty over the moon about it right now, so we'll see how it goes long term. I have this horrible feeling that the stitching will cause a weak spot in the hammock body... we'll see!

Are there any baffles in the hammock body? Where does the insulated area stop...around your knees?

I'm sure the seams weaken it some, but I haven't noticed anything I'm worried about. I'm sure seam placement is important, though.

Looks good Wentworth. Your butt should stay toasty.

No baffles Jeff. The insulation starts at the top of my head and finishes half way down my calves

That's about how mine is...haven't noticed any weakness that I'm worried about yet. I always keep an eye on the corners (next time I'll probably round them out) and on the little bit of backstitching.

ahh please excuse the stupid question...but how do you keep the insulation from sliding down and bunching up inside the casing?..

I'm thinking you don't. But that is just a guess. You might be able to refluff it each time.

Has anyone ever tried any of the seam glues out there. The might be something to look into instead of sewing into the bottom of the hammock for the baffles. I have never tried it, so I can not speak for it's life span.

    Arg! that's a brilliant thought!
I can feel another project coming on.

Completely offtrack, but thismorning I went out to pack up my hammock and tarp, only to find that a bird has put it's claws through the silnylon (I guess), causing a 2 inch tear.
I think the nylon I bought must have been seconds, because when it arrived there were threads of silnylon hanging off it. When I pulled them, it put a thin tear in the fabric.
Any hints for mending this stuff?
    thanks in advance

I haven't needed to yet. When I lay down, I spend about 15 seconds smoothing some down up to the shoulders...it stays there pretty well. When the hammock is unoccupied it looks like there's a lot of room for the down to stay stuck at the bottom, but when you get in the hammock it spreads out pretty well.

My first DownHammock had baffles...I didn't like laying right on the baffle seams inside the hammock, and with the second version (like Risk's) I found that they're not really necessary. YMMV.

Kind of sounds like DWR. I haven't had any sil fray on me. Or maybe the sil treatment did not go completly though the fabric.

I heat seal with a candle anything that frays.
