    Hammocks not Allowed

Argggggg.... I was checking out a place where my son and I go canoeing and they have a good size campground. I called them to see when the season starts and asked about hammocks. They said hammocks are allowed to be hung, however, sleeping in hammocks is not permitted. What a joke.

The guy basically laughed at me on the phone for wanting to sleep in the hammock. What a joke.

Sounds like you should go over there and educate this poor soul.

They are allowed, but you're not allowed to sleep in them?

Sounds like there isn't a problem then. Who and how is anybody going to prove you were asleep? Just set up out of plain view and don't worry about it.

Many campgrounds do not allow sleeping in an unenclosed environment. In other words you have to be in a tent or RV you can't sleep in your car without proper window shades etc. It may be the guy was assuming a hammock is an open sling of fabric and so would not meet the enclosure rule. He probably has never been exposed to a real camping hammock.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Would Pohick Bay work for you? It's not under the Fairfax Co Park Authority.

Rule 8 seems to be the operative one, and by its wording you would technically be in compliance if you slept in a hammock.

I noticed also that the promotional picture shows a canopy guyline tied directly to a tree, so it wouldn't be illogical to expect that hammocks would be okay, especially with straps.

I'll also bug the FCPA when I next get back to town.

    Good luck!

I think I would call back & ask if the owner was there. If the owner turns out to be the same guy, maybe you can calmly explain that you & your friends have been enjoying their campground for some time but you have learned that the most comfortable way to sleep is in a hammock, & tell him that a growing number of folks are finding that out, explaining that until they learn more about it, most folks don't know just how great a hammock is.

Chances are that the guy you talked to may not be the owner. Hopefully the owner would show a little more respect in explaining the guide lines, even if they are un-educated to hammocks<G>.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Slowhike, the owner is (unfortunately?) the Fairfax County Park Authority. If Hacktorius doesn't beat me to it, I'll check out the government hierarchy there when I get back in town and see if I can talk to someone with the power to say 'yes'.

I think that calling for further clarification is probably a mistake.

A wise man once gave me some sage advice, "Don't ask questions that you don't want to hear the answer to."

I think that applies here. He should refer to his hammock/tarp as a tent, or a tarp-tent. That will bring him semantically into compliance. Good enough.

The guy is probably thinking backyard hammock and not a camping hammock. Educate and convert. That is your mission.

I agree with not asking the question* in the first place but that's already happened.

I'll be talking face to face, not over the phone...

IME it's usually possible to work or change "the system" if you can find the right person and accommodate their constraints / concerns.
