In a country where we can wonder what the the meaning of is , is.
Where an earmark isn't an earmark if someone new decides it isn't - then a hammock isn't a hammock if we say it isn't. Alice from Wonderland had no problem having things mean whatever she wanted them to mean. We ought to have that same opportunity. Of course I never ask such questions - that way I can't truthfully say ' sorry I did not know there was a rule against it' - and as I get get older I can also use 'sorry I forgot'

My $0.02: "it is easer to get forgiveness than permission"

Just a thought for future reference.
Granted; Not getting permission now may mean that "We" are never allowed to hang at the area in question regardless of "area in question",,, ever!
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

Clearly the maxim makes sense only in a "gray" area. Discretion, in context, is always called for.

In the case of Burke Lake Park, it's not clear to me how authoritative the answer Hacktorius got from the Park employee was. The FCPA policy maker(s) probably never thought about hammock camping when setting the guidelines. It seems to me that the NVPA didn't. (see the Pohick park guidelines I linked to before). I wouldn't be at all surprised if the policy stems from a desire to preempt certain non-recreational behavior (homeless living? vagrancy?) and "we" just got lumped in with that, in the mind of the Park employee.

IMHO, Mrprez is right on target -- "educate and convert." I'll try to find and chat with the right person when I get home in April.

Late edit: In looking through the park policy and rules I find no mention of hammocks, whatever. Perhaps the Park employee was extrapolating policy on his own.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to quote the letter from the LNT Center when responding.

For the individual yes but for the community it could be bad. Each person has to Hang thier on Hang but I would caution everyone (especially those hanging with Scouts, I am happy to expand if you want) to remember that while hammock use is growing it is still a "ground dwellers" world. I don't want the opportunities closed for all because some went "stealth" and tried to do an end run on the rules. Ekul I am in no way calling you out specifically, several have made the same comment. I have been weighing whether to say anything. I sincerely hope that this reponse is recieved in the spirit it was humbly submitted.
