Buying a top quilt and don't like mummy bags?

OK wow I'm learning.... I hate mummy bags because of the foot box, gotta have a wide foot box. I don't mean crazy wide, my current bag is a semi rectangular, when zipped closed it's 22" wide at bottom.

I tried ordering a TQ as wide as I could for the foot box room BUT here is the deal...When you cinch the foot end of the bag closed it sucks the width right out of the bag, so no matter how wide you get it, if your like me and need that wide foot area. The TQ I got is 44" wide at the foot end, so I'm thinking half would be 22"....nope....cinched tight it's more like 16" wide at the foot.

So whats the answer? not sure but I think I'm going to see if I can have one made that has snaps to close the end instead of a draw string, that way it will close like a regular semi rectangular bag.

Just thought I'd through my experience out there in case someone else was looking for the same.

A sewn footbox has a wider feel to it in my opinion, speaking Hammock Gear. Another thing to consider is that much of the restrictive feel of a mummy bag isn't a factor with at TQ because you have so much more freedom to move your legs and bend at the knees.

Not to mention your feet get kind of funneled in a hammock anyway? I can't remember a time when my feet WEREN'T together in my hammock.

That's true but 16" gathered end is too restrictive for me. I've been using a MH 35/50 flip that is semi rectangular, bottom is 44" unzipped and 22" wide when zipped. I'm happy with that width totally. Give me the freedom to turn on my side without getting bound up in the bag.

And I do have to say my BB hammock is really roomy with that foot box, I feel pretty much like I'm at home on the queen size bed. I can start on my back in that hammock and end up on my side.

Sounds like a DIY job, to get it just how you want it. Or a custom-order job, but the issue is size and shape, not snaps v. zipper v. draw cord.

    Just my thoughts.

Not to discredit your thoughts but I spoke with UGQ and in fact the drawstring is a major factor in the width of the foot box. When you cinch the end of a bag you lose almost 2/3 of the total material width as compared to half when it just gets folded over. A 44" wide bag cinched is about 16 to 17" wide where as a 44" bag folded over is 22" wide. UGQ sent me a pic of a sewn flat foot box. I attached it to show what I'm trying to explain.

The problem is you don't want a 'footbox'. To have a quilt that gives you 22" of room, the length of the quilt before cinched (or if it was a sewn footbox) would need to be nearly 69" (circumference of a circle = diameter x pi).

What you seem to want is a envelope style foot area, like a traditional bag. If you go with that, I don't know that you're really gaining anything by using a topquilt as opposed to just using a lightweight down bag. The only real difference is that it's oriented a little different with the opening running up the middle instead of the side.

+1 that a sewn footbox does seem to help. Having said that, most are going to be about the same size. If it's too small, another +1 that a custom request to someone like HammockGear is probably in order. I'd call them and describe your problem and I'm sure they will have some good recommendations.
