Definately a deep south guy here in MS. Daytime temps are of little regard to me in this respect, however, I want (need) to be in the lower 70s upper 60s to be truly happy at night. Once they get over that, I'll probably stop with the outdoor hangs till they drop back down (although I love hanging in the backyard when it rains - call me romantic).

Higher elevations are not an option due to time/funds. I have gotten a length of 40D Digi Camo nylon to make a double gathered end that can be hung outside (preferably inside) when I want my hammock nap and the temps are too high.

One day, the lottery and lots of wooded acreage groomed to perfection with so many trees to hang from and water sources to use, I'll be hosting group hangs every month like clockwork.

my philosophy is you can always put on more layers but you can only take off so many before you get arrested. Luckily the early part of this warm season hasn't been too unbearable (well until recently)...sadly I think it's getting too hot now and it's really not the heat that bothers me- its the humidity. I'm already looking forward to the fall.

I did lay in the back yard a couple of days ago... It was 91+ but I still feel asleep; so maybe hammocks are really good for hot weather.

I still have a trip planned for the Sipsey next weekend 21-23 if you're interested to try some hot weather?
    It's a hammock thing, you won't understand!

The wife no longer kicks me out of bed after she saw a hammock hanging in the dog house.

Re: When do you call it quits?

I have been spending time in my hammock in the yard as I can find a few minutes here and there. With 7 little girls, they always seem to find me! Anyway, I have noticed that I am so much cooler lying in the hammock than sitting on the swing or in a chair. It's like hammocks have built in A/C. The slightest air movement keeps your whole body cooler.

I love the hot weather and rather have the night temps 75 and above. My particular methods of camping are always right next to the water (kayak camping) so the water has that pleasant cooling effect. For me a perfect trip is water temps that are comfortable to swim, and air temps hot enough to make you want to swim. The added bonus for me is the hot weather makes my bones feel better.
I also enjoy hanging in my yard in the hot temps but I have to have shade from the sun if I’m not on the water.

    I agree with going higher.
Here in SC, it can approach 100 degrees in June and continue thru August. That's too hot to hang unless there is a good breeze and ventilation.
I went to Cherokee NC one July. It was 98 here and 68 there.
    Awesome!

    waking up a nearly-dead thread

the last summer trip i did 2 years ago up at the walls of jericho on the TN/AL border and we were, as expected, inundated by copperheads and ticks.

it was during an EXTREMELY dry/droughty July.

this year has been a lot more tolerable (though more humidity).

i went on a backpacking hiatus since spring of last year! i'm definitely wanting to get back into it, glad to see so many AL hangers.

i'm in the process of getting a hammock setup again, so hopefully by the next planned hang, i can join y'all.

    (i'm in hoover too)
