    Legal to hang

Has anyone had any issues using a hammock in NP at designated camp sites. The regulations at some parks are that you use the tent pads, does hanging exclude you from this rule? At most places this is not an issue, but at some of the major parks the rangers are a bit more strict. Curious if anyone has ever had a problem.

Ed Speer has a list of hammocking legal/illegal sites in his newsletters. Here's the most recent one:

He updates it based on what folks send him, so it's not a complete list by any means...and be sure to email him as you discover places that encourage/discourage/outlaw hammocking.

I run into this a lot because I'm a bicycle tourer. The biggest problem I've had is with city parks. Newport News Park in Va. for instance, has a rule that you can't attach anything to a tree. They seem to have harder rules and enforce the issue more. This is perhaps because of the usage that a park sees. And the closer you are to a big metropolitan area the more common it is.
I haven't had a problem in any state parks or national parks as of yet. Most of the ones I've been too just think I'm cool.
