With a slight possibility of havong to go to ground on an upcoming hike, I thought I would practice the setup inmy yard. Can't say iam real happy with it, but I guess it would work in a pinch.

I had to setup like that one night of a four night trip. It sucked, but we had hiked in the water all day and I was too tired to care. I was lucky enough to find a sandy spot to setup and I missed all of the roots or rocks I would have found otherwise.
I hope you can avoid it, but if you can't you will be ok. Just don't forget to trench your tarp if there is a chance of rain.

Thanks guys, hoping to avoid it. Doing the Art Loeb, and read there was one spot that might force me to ground, if we camp there. Gonna review the map again and see if we can plan to avoid camping in that are.

You must be hiking with ground dwellers to even consider such a thing. Or maybe you are possessed by a ground-dweller demon and need to find an exorcist.
Don't give in to the urge to ground-dwell. That leads to the Dark Side. May the force be with you.
I feel your pain
I have a scout jamboree in July - and from the looks of the site on google earth - it's a lovely green pasture that we will be camping in
I'll have the hammock in the hopes for a few good trees
but
more than likely in a tent - which is OK as I'll be on my Exped downmat 9DLX if Im on the ground at least I know it'll be OK
Yep SilvrSurfr, hiking with ground dwellers indeed. Hoping to convert one or two before the trips out. I have a nice comfortable NeoAir and a tent, but it's still not as nice as my Blackbird...nor as light. I think I will be OK, though, looks like we will still be in trees the first night, and past the open area by the second night.

You will definetly not have a problem hanging anywhere on the Art Loeb. Ive been hiking there for years and there is always somewhere to hang. Even on the top near shining rock, there are plenty of pines that will work. Having a way to set you tarp low to the ground can never hurt though.
