Greetings All,
Last weekend, I decided to put my sewing awl to work and make my version of the famous (infamous) Eno Slapstrap. I decided to call it the ClipStrip. Actually, my wife came up with the name.
Here's the specs and photos:
It's designed to go around a 12 inch diameter (38 inch circumference) tree two times.
The ClipStrip is made of 1 inch wide webbing and two sewn loops and the completed length is 107 inches.
You start with a 132 inch length of webbing.
Fold one end to make a 3.5 inch sewn loop for securing/threading around the tree.
Fold the other end to make the 21 inch sewn loop or 'clip strip.' The loop is segmented into five 3.5 inch carabiner clip-ins.
I tested this very thoroughly and it never even flexed. It's incredibly strong. This may be due to the fact that I used a sewing awl that had waxed heavy-duty thread instead of a sewing machine.
A sewing awl is typically used to repair saddles, sails, and other leather products. My sewing awl is made by Stewart MFG and it's called the "Speedy Stitcher." It cost about $14.00. www.speedystitcher.com
It took me about 15 minutes per stitch. That's a lot longer than it would take me if I had a sewing machine - I think the effort was well worth it.
