Thanks for the NM trip report Grizz,
You mentioned you were wearing your favorite hiking pants, but I couldn't catch what brand. Care to elaborate the brand and what you find that you like about them?

wow, you were paying attention. That was a throw-away line about the pants!

These were made by Columbia, purchased at the Philmont Scout Ranch in 2006, with a Philmont symbol sewn in for decoration. Philmont stopped carrying them after that year, and nothing I saw (or see) in the Columbia line is equivalent.

    Features I like
    • zip-off legs to make shorts (or just create an airspace by opening 1/3 of the way)
    • zippers at the ankles to allow zip-off legs to be pulled on or off while leaving your boots on
    • deep pockets front and back, e.g., large enough to stick a 1 qt Nalgene in (not that I carry Nalgenes in these pockets, but I do like the depth). Additional cargo pockets on the front of the thighs
    • Elasticized waist
    • A lot of space inside the legs

While many other pants have similar features with the zippers, I think it is the pockets that I really like. The fabric is rugged, but not particularly lightweight. The airiness of the cut makes them comfortable when hot anyway.

Every now and then I study the Columbia offerings to see if something like this re-appears, but no joy as yet.

Very well done Grizz. Entertaining and informative! What more could you ask for! My son and I just got back from Philmont in June. We packed light too. Everybody kept making "daypack" remarks as they lugged their massive packs around. I missed not being able to use my hammock though...
