Maybe we're saying similar things, but the failure mode of the restrained buckling strut is still a compression failure rather than a shear failure.

Curved-strut tensegrity is more artistic than functional. The bending stiffness needed in a curved strut is significant to prevent a runaway p-delta effect on the compression loads. The configuration takes a theoretical nominal load eccentricity to start and changes it to a known large load eccentricity from the center point of the strut. Weight savings are not to be found down that path.

not sure which PVC it is, he spoke of a 3mm wall thickness, and also that he added a couple aluminum boat hook bars in the pipes themselves,

that kayak hammock setup is amazing! i can just picture being on a calm lake and taking a mid day nap, maybe with an adult beverage of choice..... unfortunately i have to go back to the cold snowy reality of winter.

Shug mentions the glories of breakfast from the hammock. With the kayak setup you could catch breakfast from the hammock. Impressive.

Have you considered a handy hammock stand? http://www.handyhammock.co.uk/
They are a bit pricy at £89.98(124.69$). But, they weigh only 2.2 lbs! and pack up into a small package! I've been considering one of these for a while, but just haven't committed. See what you think. I think it would suit you well...

PVC isn't nearly strong enough for this. PVC is one of my favorite materials to work with, but in this case I'd choose aluminum tubing over PVC.

Just not strong enough. Do you realize the stresses involved?

Have you thought about a turtlelady stand using bamboo? It would probably be a bit lighter than the turtle dog.
