    Suspension Tension

I'm considering a bridge hammock for indoor use, perhaps on a stand, and have a couple of questions.

Does a bridge hammock require more tension on the suspension than a gathered-end?

Does a bridge hammock require more space to hang? What is the shortest distance that you have hung a bridge? What is the smallest tree size that you have hung a bridge from?

    Thanks.

To adjust the degree to which the middle is pulled up you can adjust how
far apart to pull the ends of the suspension triangle. The more you pull the more tension there will be on the side suspension, and compression on the spreader bars. But as for the tension on the line between hammock and tree,
aim for 30 degree angle when loaded, and the tension on that part---really the only part you can directly compare with a gathered end hammock---will be the same.

Depends on whose bridge hammock you're talking about. A RidgeRunner is pretty long because of its big suspension triangle needed for the wide spread. A BMBH is comparatively shorter. I don't have one with me to hang and measure...

In my current crop of DIY bridge hammocks I've been pulling the spreader bars in a bit---5.5 to 6 feet between them---and this shortens things because the suspension triangles start at the spreader bars. Apex to apex of suspension triangles less than 10'. How much more you need to attach to a tree depends on your suspension after that (considering buries in splices, and so on). I am more constrained by the ridgeline of my tarp than I am the hammock when it comes to hanging between trees.

This weekend with the scouts I hung between one tree that must have been 4' in circumference, and one that was maybe 9" circumference. The thin one bent some when loaded, but having the fatter one as a base limited the inevitable sagging.

Bridge hammocks should have the standard 30* down angle to uspensions.
