Question Beginner, looking to learn about mods for claytors

Hello everyone, I'm fairly new at hammockin although i managed to get my claytors out a couple nights on my summer vacay in colombia. I learned alot of things by trial and error, but I'm looking to modify my suspension to make set up easier. I have rencently purchased (online) dutchgear buckle cinch straps, but i'm not sure where to go after I get them. I have more questions..does any one have experience modifying theur claytor?? btw I have one JH and one expedition.

I have the claytor JH and I use cinch buckles. I attached the buckles to the hammock with an amsteel continuous loop, and use 1inch tree straps to the tree. There is a claytor subforum here which may answer some of your questions but go ahead and list them and see what feedback other hangers give you.

    claytor mods.

Thanks jeff, so as a follow up question, the amsteel loop goes through the channels of the claytor hammock and then connect to the buckle?? is this right. If so, do the amsteel loops cause any wear and tear on the channels when in use?

I have had amsteel loops on my claytors for years with no apparent wear. I have whoopies larksheaded into the loops going to tree hugger straps. I never used the original suspension system at all, this is the fifth year of heavy use and the channels are holding up just fine.

The end channels of any hammock are designed to take the stress without excessive wear. As canoebie said, and many others, their hammocks have been in service for many years and do not show signs of being "worn out".

    diamond tarp knots and chords

OK, so I don't have to worry about sawing or wear. On another note, another thing that I have struggled with is putting up my diamond fly. What is the best way to do this? what kind of chord do you guys use?? what kind of knot is best for around the trees?

I use this method and I think it is just the cat's pajamas.

Easy, keeps tarp taut and allows for movement of tarp to center or over hammock as needed before the final tightening. Also allows straps from hammock to go up through the center of the V.

I too recently got a Claytor JH, and had a problem with tarp lines slipping. I switched to 12' paracord to tie to trees, 6' paracord for stakes. I haven't tried it since switching to paracord, but that should fix slipping. Before I even strung up the tarp, I put a small red zip-tie on the loops for the trees for easy verification. You could also use different color cord. I don't like the fine line to string up the net, I'll switch that also.

Cinch buckles and straps like others. Amsteel loops through the end channels to connect the buckles. I also use biners on my straps at the tree end. Easy peasy. Haven't changed in years. tried other methods bu kept coming back to the straps and buckles.

    Amsteel loops

Ok thanks to everyone for the help. Youve put in the right direction. As for the amsteel loops, ive been looking through the forums. Is it better to purchase a pair already made, or diy?. I have 550 test parachord, could it carry out the same function as the amsteel chord?
