How do you get down off a horse?
You don't, you get down off a duck.

And I thought I was low budget on some of my projects.... It's great to start the morning with some laughter. Thanks for sharing. When you get enough down, we need a video from the duck's POV.

I certainly foresee a permanently bald, cold duck

Food for that duck is going to cost you more than the down would have. Of course you get some free fertilizer out of the deal too....just don't let it inside 'cause the carpets don't need it.

I know you are trying to save $$$$ and harvest your down, but even with your own duck you will still get stuck with the bill.

If you need enough for a TQ and an UQ you should talk to these guys, 'cause they are ducks that can really get down.

I was actually thinking that my next EXTREME DIY project would be to try and grow feathers and down myself. Then I wouldn't need a top quilt and underquilt.

Convincing the wife to let me keep the duck long enough to harvest enough down to outfit a family of 5 with both summer, winter, and 3 season top quilts and underquilts is going to be the fun part.

If the common duck is anything like a Blue-Gold Macaw, you'll have enough feathers in mere days (friend of mine owned one of those giant/scary/noisy things). How is down harvested, anyway? Sheep-shears?

Other than the duck scratching me when I pick it up it is very well behaved, not house broken but well behaved.

As a rule of thumb, the larger the bird and the colder the climate in which they live, the larger the down cluster and the higher the fill power of the down.

Zip ties and a power drill to spin them (the zip ties not the duck) at least that was what it looked like on the episode of Dirty Jobs when they were harvesting down.

Hrmm... Do they make a GoPro HD small enough to put on a duck?

If I pluck it bald, that will just add to the list of DIY projects...
Now I'll have to make it a down coat

Any duck recipe I make would need to be able to be served with cheese and quackers

You may need to contact your insurance man about some Afflac for you and the duck
