The 50 State Project: US State Parks & Hammocks

Curiously awaiting a KY response. I do know the manager at at one park (Fort Boonesborough) told me it was OK.

    Thank you!

Just throwing this out there - If there's an issue with anything just let me know, and if I can, I'll fix it or search for a way to fix it. I'm learning as I go as this isn't set up like any database program I've ever worked in. Be patient!

Things I learned today: The post number in the right hand corner is hyperlinked. Who knew? Needless to say all the post referencing links are updated.

Possibilities: If I can figure out how to work the queries the way I want, eventually we can add all sorts of information and split it into separate tabs for viewing - State Parks, Conservation Areas, Non-U.S. Locations. In the end it could be quite a collection of information.

If any of the Mods wanna jump on the editing train I'd be more than happy to add you. I'd just like someone, anyone, else on there with the ability to edit and add others in case, for any reason, I'm unable to do so.

As I used to tell my boss, "You HAVE to learn this, cause yanno, what if I die tomorrow?!".

Great Thread and the Table will be a very useful tool

This thread was a great idea Rev and the results truly will be a fantastic resource.

I look forward to seeing Texas updated with an official response.

From an unofficial point of view, Texas is a pretty hammock friendly state as long as the park rules are followed and no damage is done to trees.

Although I have not personally contacted state officials beyond the management of individual parks, I have had much success and many positive experiences camping in Texas State Parks.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife web page lists 107 locations. Of those, 22 are day use or otherwise not available for camping. Of the remaining 85, I’ve hammock camped in 20 and been welcomed and well received.

We have enjoyed an annual group hang in one of our state parks each of the last 4 years and there have been several smaller group hangs in others over the years.

In addition I've visited another 16 as recons for future outings and discussed hammock camping at nearly every location and received favorable interest and comments. I've heard similar reports from friends and acquaintances on HF that have hammock camped in some of those I have not yet visited.

My hope is that the official response is as positive as the actual individual site responses have been.

Only if you hike in. The traffic here in DC is bad enough already.

David – I received a copy of your e-mail from the DEP Web site. I have surveyed our State park/forest camping areas and this type of hammock would be permitted within our designated campsites. Our administrative code strictly prohibits any damage/mutilation to any natural resource but from the information you supplied, the sling hammocks would not cause any damage to the trees.

Which is only right and smart. And why I asked permission. (Too many missionaries spoil the soup.)

I spent years at Oregon DOT making up spreadsheets as flat file dBases--for my OWN personal use. Is no right way. Only ways that work (one's that don't work, forget), some better than others. Do NOT over-look how useful column filters can be. That's the quickest way to do a query.

I'm going to make a copy of the table and play around with what's available. The terminology is quite different and I know what I think things are, but that doesn't mean that's what they really are. If I lose data I don't want it to be on the working copy.

I hope that is legal in Alabama State Parks, because we are gonna do a hammock making class and eventually a hammock camping class this year with one of the State Parks. I have not heard the official word though.

Any chance that we can get a sample of the email you sent out to all of these states? From the responses that have come back it sounds like it was pretty well laid out and I wouldn't mind using it for local parks and such if you wouldn't mind. I mean since you have already done all the work and all!
