The 50 State Project: US State Parks & Hammocks

I am a man that has a hard time sleeping, and usually it's wasted away with video games but last night, I WANTED ANSWERS!

I emailed every state park system in the USA except a few and I'm getting replies back now. This thread will be for the answers I'm getting and the progress being made by any states that have yet to embrace hammocks.

Replies are rolling in now and I will post them here.

MODS: Ill need your help in keeping the replies at the top of this thread if you can please

OK boys and girls, heres who I DIDN'T email:

Alaska, Florida (we already know they have a hammock pilot program installed), South Carolina (I got the all clear on hammocks last year), Hawaii and Pennsylvania (their website was down)

On with the replies. I will be adding more as they come in as a lot of people are out of the office from the Easter holiday and others needed to be forwarded.

After talking more with Rick, he can not say anything more officially regarding hammocks. Usually this is because it would take a long "legislative" process and rule changes, so right now we fit into a "gray" area. Cool with me.

The Wisconsin State Parks System has no specific rules against the use of hammocks. We prohibit anything that would damage trees, buildings or other items on the property, which would eliminate screwing anything into a tree. The straps you describe sound like they would not damage the tree, so they would be fine.

I have received your e-mail regarding a request for clarification about Oklahoma State Parks camping regulations. You are correct in noting that one concern involves possible damage to trees that are used to anchor a hammock. Thank you for your offer of sending me images and information about the webbing system that you use.

Another aspect of our concern involves protecting guests from possible injury. The most common species of trees that are growing in Oklahoma State Park campgrounds are post oak and blackjack oak. While these are tough, drought-hardy trees, they are also susceptible to heart rot. A tree limb or tree trunk may not show the presence of this disease until later stages of the disease’s progression. Thus, using such a tree for the suspension of a hammock poses a potential safety risk.

I will gladly share the additional information that you have offered with our agency director. Thank you for sending it to me at the following address.

I am in receipt of your information about the subject. At present, one of our policies can be interpreted to prohibit hammock camping. I’m interested in finding out more information from my colleagues in South Carolina and Florida. I appreciate you sending along the idea.

This is WV, and seems to indicate they are fine with us

    This is an interesting question.
Was wondering if you might let me know which of our state parks are giving out information indicating that hammocks are not allowed in our campgrounds.
    Thanks, Brad Reed
    Parks District Administrator

After a followup email I got this:

Please see link to our campground rules….

    http://www.wvstateparks.com/reg_2.htm

There is no specific reference to hammocks. They are allowed on WV State Park campgrounds per conditions of other general regulations. Of course, we permit camping in designated camping areas only. Thanks, Brad Reed

At this time we don’t allow hammocks in our State Parks but I will have our legislation people look into it and forward your email for consideration. I have also attached a link for our Ad Rules that would have to be changed by the legislature if this were going to proceed. http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/adrules/...nts/17-130.pdf

Thank you for your e-mail inquiry about the use of hammocks in Delaware State Parks. I have reviewed our campground policy and it really does not address the use of hammocks. It does define what a camping unit is and they are defined as such:

I would recommend that you contact the respective Parks directly as to how they would address the issue. Your argument seems to be sound as to the use, but I would defer to the respective Parks Management teams. Below is the contact information for our State Parks that have family campgrounds:

    Lums Pond State Park 302-368-6989

    Killens Pond State Park 302-284-4526

    Trap Pond State Park 302-875-5153

    Cape Henlopen State Park 302-645-8983

    Delaware Seashore State Park 302-227-2800

Thank you again for the inquiry and we hope that you enjoy Delaware State Parks.

Thanks Rev for taking time to send out the request for info.
I'll be watching the responses. I could see a nice reference chart coming from this for the traveler.

Maybe I'm not seeing it, but I'm skimming through the "ad rules" from Illinois, and I don't see where Hammocks are implicitly or explicitly prohibited. In fact, I would say that hammock camp would qualify as a "primitive camp". I haven't combed through it though, so if anyone else cares to maybe you could clarify further.
