Descender rings should not be deforming on you. Most of those are made for atleast 2 tons. They are after all made for descending while rock climbing, what kind of business would the companies have if their rings deformed after a few uses?

This is an issue you need to take to the company, even if you decided to use your new method. Companies cannot improve their products if noone tells them there is an issue.

In the past I have had simple amsteel continuous loops on the ends of a hammock and used a sheet bend type knot to secure the webbing. Works fine but if you get in the hammock and have to readjust it or fine tune it, it is more difficult to untie a loaded knot and retie it than to simply slide webbing through a cinch buckle especially if you want to be accurate about your adjustments. If its just for a quick hang it's not as big a deal but if you are going to sleep through the night you may want your hammock tweaked Goldie Locks style. YMMV. As others have mentioned, I have SMC rings and no warping. The ones you have are even thicker which makes me wonder.

Either that or a batch slipped out without heat treating or somebody got a deal direct from China. BTW, the SMC site says Made in America.
    YMMV

You need some sort of drip ring. Without metal, water will find its way in from you tree straps.

Think that might be a typo, the Omegas are not SMCs...I own both SMCs and Omegas. They are 2 totally different rings. SMCs are rolled aluminum and are hollow and the OP Rappel rings are solid forged aluminum rings.

Thanks for all your suggestions. These rings definitely can't hold a VW, lol.
Can we see a pic of the deformed rings?

Thanks for the clarification - I asked for SMC rings, and that is what I was sold - definitely like them and rated well.

Actually SMC makes both heavy and light rings. For hammock use I suspect most of us are talking about the descender rings because they are low cost and strong enough for properly hung hammocks. Especially with a garda hitch. They are roughly 1/4 in rolled from a flat stamping so they can be hollow and will have a crack around the rim that is the rolled edge. They are rated for around 3000 lbs. Omega Pacific and SMC also make heavier forged rings that cost more and hold more weight. The SMC rigging/descender is rated at ~7000 lbs but is smaller with a 1.7 in OD and 1.1 in inside. That makes it tight for 1 inch webbing in a hitch.
