    For those with Partial UnderQuilt...

What is the lowest temps you can go down to(and be comfortable), without using a pad for your lower legs/feet?

I was looking to get a 50 deg. top quilt and 40 deg Phoenix for warmer temps(down to 40 deg), but dont want to add a pad to my set up, just for my legs/feet. Or am I just kidding myself b/c I really need a full length underquilt?

Maybe a piece of reflectix in my footbox would get me down to 40 deg?

Personally, I'd advise getting the full length. I've slept in both and the full length is SO worth the extra!

What do you use to sit on during rest stops & in camp?
If you have a foam pad or refectix, it will be dual purpose.
Also, if you use a frameless pack, the pad can be triple purpose.

But in the end, it's personal preference and priorities.

Well I have a 3/4 for the bottom entry and am very happy, to 32 degrees.
There was an Old Man with a owl,

He sat on a rail, And imbibed bitter ale,
Which refreshed that Old Man and his owl

Without anything...I dunno, never really tried to push it. If I had to guess, I would say no cooler than 40-45. Even just putting my jacket under my legs gives me enough of a boost for the shoulder seasons.

Well it sounds like with a piece of reflectix in the footbox of my top Quilt, I should be ok to 40 deg with a partial underQuilt....Thanks for the input!

I know you've already made up your mind but just wanted to echo Mad's post. I use a Thermarest sit pad under my legs since I carry it to sit on anyways. I've also used it to (carefully) fan fires and as a makeshift stove windblock. It would also make a good makeshift splint as well as...you get the picture

There's just no telling on this. Folk's feet chill differently. Don't want to carry a pad, not even a soft one ? Then how about a few pairs of socks, at least one of them of fairly coarse and stiff and not-so-compressible wool.

The purpose of the pad or socks is to keep heat from flowing directly out from contact with the hammock to the outside air. If your feet sweat at all, the hammock will act, too, as an evaporative pad, very much chilling your feet.

I have a full and a partial UQ to choose from, and don't regret using a partial UQ, with pad, for reduction in bulk.

Last thing: For me and maybe for most, keeping calves warm is just not an issue--think of all the men and women who can wear kilts, skirts, or shorts in winter -- which is why partial UQ's can work so well.

Hah, I'm short enough (5'4) that my Phoenix UQ covers all of me down to the degree rating.

It may depend on how much of your leg is exposed. You could tuck an extra sweatshirt or jacket into your footbox and wear some warm socks. I'm a big fan of smartwool's.

Other then that I think everyone has given you some great suggestions.
