Is paracord ok for ridge lines and everything else?
Is paracord ok for ridge lines and everything else?
Everything but supporting your body weight..... Honestly, nobody loves paracord more than I do.. But there are much lighter, better options out there....
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..
If we're thinking tarp ridgeline and tie outs - yes its fine. It does take on water and it does stretch meaning there are a number of better options out there but it will work. I would look into something like dacron kite line (nice and cheap, light and does not stretch). If you are thinking hammock ridgeline, you may want to conisider the other stronger options available.

You can use it for a tarp like Dragon360 says, but it will likely not be tight as when you set it up by morning. Like he said, there are better and still inexpensive options. Just too much stretch, especially over longer spans. I have a bunch of paracord, but I usually use it for stuff sack drawstrings now.
Just a note from a fat guy. I am sure it would hold but paracord makes noise when you get in the hammock( probably stretching). I used some to tie up the gathered end of a hammock and although I wasn't worried about falling, I much prefer amsteels quite version of hold my *** off the ground.
I don't use it on any gear to speak of but I still carry at least 50 feet of mil spec paracord with me for use if I need it. Always have since I was a teenager ... comes in handy now and then!

I use it to hang my food bag and just to have for misc needs but it's too bulky and soaks up water. I plan to replace it.
+1 on carry some. I too don't use it on any gear. Although the scenario was much different, I've had 550 cord fail on me before. Ridgelines still hold a fair amount of weight and tension and a stretching piece of cord kind of kills dialing in that perfect lay. Zing-it, Lash-it, or Amsteel would be significantly better.
If you do use it, just remember not to hang any higher than you care to fall.

I love carrying the stuff... It's just extra cordage for whatever I need... I do a little bushcraft while I'm out every once in a while... Nice to have lines to hang something from the trees or something to tie two poles together for cooking over the fire... Or tying your buddy a thank you gift while your out on the trail with him... I use decorative knots and stuff as small tokens of appreciation/friendship...
