    Moto-hangers - roadside camp - water

After a day of riding, you are about to set up for the night. The spot you pick may not always be near drinkable water.

    Do you:
    - filter whatever is available nearby
    - make a stop earlier in the day and load up on potable water
    - load up on non-potable water earlier and treat/filter it while setting camp
    - set camp up, and ride to the closest place where you know there's good water?

If you prefer the "loading up" method, how do you carry your camp/cook/drink water to camp?

I'm on my way to get into this experience, and wondered whether or not is a filter or means of chemical treatment a necesessity to carry, and what wisdom has this community to offer....

    Cheers!

I do a couple of things.

I always have 2 days of water with me. I drink day 1 and replace it thereby always leaving me a full days water available.

If I am camped near water I boil it or put it though Sawyer Squeeze if I don't build a fire.

With bike fully loaded I can still run my cable lock through the handle of a gallon or two of water. Camping from my bike means daily rides, so I get water daily.
Camping where they have water you can wash & shower with, I normally boil and make coffee from it.

    As always, Will

I'm with dkurfiss. Usually have 2 (1) liter bottles of water with me. I in my tankbag I drink and refill through the day, and 1 in my bags for emergencies.

Where I camp they always have water but if I knew I needed water I'd just stop and pick up a gallon in the evening before I stopped. I usually stop and pick up a beer or two

    Hmmmm...
I'm not overly thrilled with hanging a gallon or two off my bike, even for a short distance on the camp approach leg.

    Anyone using those dromedary bags?

Keep the ideas coming folks. Your wisdom is appreciated.

    hey man you asked
If you can't tie on, strap down, or stuff in a jug of water. You have to much stuff.

Some folks use rotopaks on bikes to carry water. They attach securely.

I buy, but am never far from civilization in this small country. However, I do carry a smallish Katadyne metal pump model when on the bike, for convenience.

Japan has so many cool, rushing streams, I'd not hesitate to use the filter more if I were farther from stores.

Where I ride, I'm virtually never further away from civilisation than my 3l camelbak can handle - you'd have to try really hard in Europe to do that. There have been mornings where water has been scarce when I didn't fill up properly, but the water in streams and lakes back home in Sweden is potable right out of the source. If I can't be bothered to go to town, such as for morning coffee, I sometimes boil it first just to make sure, especially lake water, but it's really overkill almost always.
