From that article: "...found in tropical areas of the Western hemisphere..."

    From http://www.biokids.umich.edu/critters/Elateridae/

    "...but some tropical species glow..."

Not sure if it's a click beetle, exactly, but it may be. I imagine it's some kind of creepy crawly. Still weird though!

If using a small tarp or no tarp there would have been no barrier for the beast.

    Yep.....getting a bigger tarp.

I think you mean a hammock sock out of Ursacks. So you're the food in the bear bag!

Hiking into Rock Bluff campground at Florida’s Torreya State Park I ran into a ranger who asked me if I was armed. When I informed him I was not he reported he had met several campers in the last few weeks loaded down with cameras and arms. It seems some TV show had filmed an episode of locating Sasquatch at the park and people were coming in to try and locate one. After I left the ranger a giant tree came crashing down next to the trail. This unnerved be a little, but not enough to send up a flag. I set up camp and everything was fine until about 2:00 am when something very large came running thru camp. That was it, I packed up my hammock and marched my butt right out of there.

I can't say it was particularly scary, but I went camping in my old stomping grounds from when I worked for DCNR in Wellsboro. There's this great spot on the West Rim Trail just a few hundred yards from one of the overlooks that you can hike or drive to. Took my four legged partner in crime Blake with me, drove up and set up camp. This was about two in the afternoon. We're just hanging out, lounging around camp for a few hours before he starts heading back to the car repeatedly. I'd get up from the hammock, walk out with him, grab something and we'd go back to camp. Pretty soon he's not even coming close to me, staying on the other side of the firepit something like 30 feet from me and keeps going back to the car. After calling him back five or six times, it clicks in my head at last. He's got better sight, smell, and hearing than I do and for some reason he does not wanna be here. If theres reason enough for him not to wanna be there, there's reason enough for me to not want to be either. Tore everything down, didn't bother packing it all back up properly, made two trips to the car to load it up and we were gone. I dunno what he didn't like about the spot after a couple hours of being there, but at the same time I'm not entirely sure I wanted to find out either.
