Tyvek looks like a popular choice, will look into it. Shame it comes mainly in white though, the black is quite expensive and doesnt seem to be available in the uk. Thanks for all the info guys.

I do not use one. My shoes are always readily accessible from where I am in the hammock and it is quick to slip them on if I need to meander around camp. It doesn't fit my "light and fast" way of camping as much. Then again, neither does my stool, but I kinda need that for my knees.

Supposedly there is a technique that has decent results if you want to dye your tyvek. I can't speak to it firsthand but there is information about it here.

I use a small piece of a USPS mailer that I keep for standing on and keeping my boots/shoes on.

I've tried dying mine before. Even with a single dose of Black rit, then a dose of green, then a dose of brown, then a dose of black, brown and green, I managed to come up with a light purple. It's possible, but it doesn't get dark like you're hoping. YMMV

Tyvek does take Sharpie or any permanent marker well. Get a couple broad tip markers and draw your own design or pattern. I've decorated many kites this way.

I use a piece of Tyvek that was used as a ground cloth for my one man tent. You can find some Black Tyvek Here

Walmart special silver SUV sun shade cut in half. Doubles as a sit pad when I am hiking.
