We Don't Sew... We Make Gear update...

Lest it might seem this series will go on forever, I want to lay out the rest of what I have planned. I do this for three reasons. One is to seek guidance on what should/should not be included. A second is acknowledge this is a lengthy series but does have a finite end in mind. The third is to help myself stay focused and on track with the project.

Part 7 - Dealing with Fabric will discuss how to manipulate the fabric while cutting and sewing. There will be a discussion of silnylon and how _I_ seem to find it handles best. (note the subjective focus)

Part 8 Discussing the process of making hammocks, both bridge and gathered end. This will include my thoughts on sewing curves. (I do not plan to address the Dual-mode Bridge.)

Part 9 Discussing tarps with particular focus on the Flat felled seam and edge binding.

Part 10 Accessories like ridgeline/edge pockets and other misc items.

Please feel free to make suggestions or advise alterations to this plan. I want these to be helpful over the long haul not just playtime for me.

As always, the 10 min time limit may prompt changes to this plan. But as of now I think I can do this as I have laid out.

I am considering zipper installation to be a more advanced gear making process and so do not plan to address that in this series. Except for the flat felled seam I have introduced and demonstrated all the seams I plan to at this point. If there is something you think should be introduced please let me know.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Sounds great... your videos have almost talked me into buying a sewing machine. Almost.

59 views... and 2 comments. I am trusting this indicates approval and not total apathy. 59 views is a lot if apathy is at work. So part 7 is being processed as I type. should be live shortly.

I'm saving them all up for a "We Don't Sew... " marathon. (schedule constraints atm) I'm very glad you're making them and look forward to learning quite a bit.

Ditto for me. Sounds like a nice way to spend a rainy day in front of the 'gear-making machine'.

The seiries is now complete. There are actually 11 videos in the whole series. I had a good time making them. I hope folks will find them useful down the line. Enjoy and let me know what you think.

To save time, could I get steered to the article on sewing lightweight fabric (like the 1.22 oz/Yd**2 that is kicking my ***.

I'm having trouble getting a good stitch. I'm using a 2020 needle and heavy upholstery thread, which may be part of the problem??

What is happening with the fabric that is kicking your butt?

What is it doing... pics please...
not sure there is anything fabric specific in the series... but I am sure we can help troubleshoot it on line. So more information and some pics would be helpful.

I am cameraless at the moment.

I cannot get the stitch to look right. the bottom thread isn't pulling up enough. More tension should help this but things don't change when I adjust it.

And I don't seem to get much variation of stitch length no matter how I adjust the foot pressure (which isn't very clearly explained in my book) My machine has a "snap" feature. It sounds like you should release the top and then push it down with the work in place.

My machine has a dial to adjust foot pressure, with a range of "normal , silk and darn".

Both of these features produced results as predicted with thicker material (2.2 oz. PU coated three or more plies)

Here's the link to the manual

    Thanks for listening
