I've seen it before; it's clever and you could even stabilize it more by running extra lines out from the pole at 90 degrees from the main tie off. He got a bit low but that could easily be adjusted.
I don't think you'd find yourself in this situation too often though; if there's only one tree then you're less likely to even find the pole...but it's still a good trick to have up your sleeve!

I have a problem with it, if he is hiking with all that rope .. why not use an A frame of rope to the log to take the sway out of it, I could do that from the same log. I just don't want to carry all that rope.
