I don't think you'd be selfish getting an UQ, but I agree that the priority would be to have a good roof over your head.

I would have to say a good tarp first also.
I am considering the same thing. Do I upgrade to underquilt or upgrade my tarp? I have ENO SN.

I camp in bear country and I am a bear Burrito.
My HG Incubator was a game changer for me. I'd rather carry 2 blue construction tarps than hang without my underquilt. I'd rather carry a tarp than the bulk of a pad.
If you want your wife to hammock, let her use the underquilt on a brisk night in the hammock.
