I was miserable sleeping on an air pad in shelters due to bugs and a bad back (L5 herniated disk) while section hiking the Vermont Long Trail. I saw a Skeeter Beater Grand Trunk hammock at Cabella's and that was that. Shug's vids helped and now i'm taking my set up to the John Muir Trail this summer to show my bro-in-law how comfortable you can be out there in the wild.

Couldn’t sleep on a pad. And now with a back injury from work that has made that problem more pronounced.

Hoping it will provide more comfort than the ground and Neo-air. I know back issues are commonly stated; ring the bell for another injured back!
Still a lot to figure out.

For me it was a change from Hiking the Adirondacks to sectioning the AT about 15 years ago. After a few decades of climbing and backpacking, I was getting tired of crawling out of a tent. I was finding I appreciated a ridge rest under my thermarest, but was still finding I wasn't sleeping well. I started hearing about hammocks on WB & VFTT and decided to take the plunge in '05 with a Hennessy Bottom entry. Never slept better. I still have tents which I loan to friends but I also have a few Hammocks which I like to modify and play with.

I worked into hammocking by looking for lightweight options for backpacking as well as seeking out better options to stay cool during warm weather.

Not what but who, SHUG made me do it! I started watching the videos and the wife and I said why not? All downhill from there.

Watched one video of his, ordered a hammock on line right then.

Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.

I'am more of a hiker/camper. I'm 61 and my first memories of camping are from about the age 6. I'm not a hanger. I have several friends who are. The all tell me that I should try it.

I am here firstly to figure out what gear I need. I live in Virginia just off Shenandoah National Park. the weather here is variable, humid and lots of bugs.
